Getting Closer

January 9th, 2007

Getting Closer is my first real foray back into music since the RSMiNC days. I had a few flirtatious visitations with fruityloops over the past few years, but this is the first time in years I’ve done something I thought was worthwhile.

It’s loud, it’s obnoxious, it’s abrasive and it’s unfriendly. I hope you like it anyway.

Comments - positive or negative - appreciated.

I will say good, but I am going to have to listen to it again to make my mind up. Whilst writing this I have listened to it again and have decided that I like it. I like that thumping beat at the start. I imagine the first 1:19 is the sound track playing in a goths head while he plays space invaders or berzerk or one of those other early, frantic video games.
Good work. I would like to hear more.

Well, first impression is that the bass drum you start with reminds me of Here’s Johnny and give me Parramatta Westfields flashbacks.

At the 1 minute mark when we start leaving parramatta, the tune gets quite playful, even, after the harsh bit at 1:20, getting a tad.. cheeky? tongue in cheek?

At 1:40 the angry older brother comes in and tells the tune off, leading it to go hypo and wind him up further.

Yea, I don’t know why I my brain works like this either.

About 2:50 it’s the argument between the two till the mormons knock on the door at the end.

I wouldn’t call it obnoxious, except for the Here’s Johnny bit, but that’s more a personal reaction thing rather than any fault of yours.

I don’t dislike it, I’m just not sure how much I do like it. Considering my crap taste in music this is probably a good thing.

Of course, it could also have to do with where my musical head is at the moment. I would like to hear more from you, as "all music is interesting, unless it’s by someone I don’t like." (Steven Snell 2004) 8)

[Oh god, I hope this doesn't scare you off sharing more music in future, I really am interested]

Glad to hear you’re gettin your ebm on dude. My thoughts:

Your bassdrum is lonely without his friend the snare. No snare makes me a sad panda.

I really liked how you sort of used the vocal samples as textures.

I really liked the soundscape-y bits. I reckon you could do a bit of work on transitions and build up between the soundscape bits and the doof bits. Even if its something as cheesy as a crescendoing hihat or a reversed flange noise or something.

Keep up the good work, my hard rockin’ amigo.

    Hey Kurt,

I like it. I’ve listened to it a few times and I think it gets better each time. Its a pretty good first attempt.

Only complaint I would have is the part which Rob refers to as "here’s johnny" may have gone on a tad too long.

Reminds me of the music from X-Kobo (http://olofson.net/kobodl/ mind you, this version of the game had very little music in it)

    so..so..dirty!

i’m not a huge fan of the genre, but i think it’s a fine example of it.
